Overview | What's New in v1.04 | System Requirements
A variety of tools have been introduced in v1.04 that allow the user to access Windows® Applications and the Internet using the same selection methods offered within the
Series 5 Software. You must have a standard (open) device to access these features.
Direct-touch access methods (Touch Enter, Touch Exit, Audio Touch)and Mouse Pause, along with their corresponding settings (Hold and Release Times, Zoom, and Click), can now be applied to your desktop and other computer programs.
If you access your device using a Switch (Autoscan; Inverse Scanning; 1-Switch
Scanning; 2-Switch Scanning; 1-Switch Dwell Scanning), you can utilize a new
tool called Mouse Scanning. This feature enables you to select and open icons on
your desktop, and ultimately use the application. The new Mouse Scanning selection method operates by dividing the touch screen into
quadrants. When a quadrant is selected, it is divided into smaller quadrants until the highlighted region on the screen is the desired object of the Windows
software element. An icon will clearly display when the Desktop selection method is active.

An onscreen keyboard created within the Series 5 Software gives the user the ability to use their current selection method to control both the keyboard and
the mouse cursor outside of the Series 5 Software communication pages. The user also retains the flexibility to return to the previous communication pages
using a single click.
Several behaviors have been added to version 1.04 to give the user more control of the applications they access. The three main categories of these
added behaviors are:
- Adjusting the position of the targeted application on the desktop
- Resizing the targeted application
- Controlling the application’s toolbar and content
The 1.04 software provides the user with more flexibility and control. New enhancements include:
- Improved onscreen mouse capabilties that can be used to select the click type, and perform Ctrl+Click, Alt+Click and
Shift+Click functions.
- The ability to define different switch inputs for Windows applications, even when the Series 5 software is not running.
- The Application Manger menu can define a default onscreen keyboard and resize the Series 5 software window.
- Using the scanning, joystick or Morse Code selection methods, direct access to the Select An Application window is
available.
- Additional computer access behaviors have been added to improve the user’s ability to control other software
applications. The Send Dialog Control allows you to scroll, move the arrow pointer, select buttons and more.
The Send Windows Button enables you to perform a wide range of tasks, such as accessing the menus in the menu
bar, scrolling and resizing the software window. Using the Change Window Position or Size feature, you can
resize or change the location of the software windows.
These features are just some examples of the control v1.04 Series 5 Software provides.
The integrated email capabilities are more powerful and easier than ever, and will function with both a standard (open) device and a dedicated (closed)
device. The new Attachments menu simplifies the process of importing files that are attached to received emails. There are also several new behaviors
designed for both email and text messaging, including Quick Reply, Read Next Email and Read Previous Email.
In v1.04, three new email behaviors have been added:
- Quick Reply to Sender: Sends the content of the current Message Window to the sender of the current email message.
- Read Next Email Message: Displays the next email message in the Message Window.
- Read Previous Email Message: Displays the previous email message in the Message Window.
In v1.04, three new email behaviors have been added:
- Text Files: Loads text directly into the message window, and/or saves it directly to the attachments folder.
- Image File: Transforms the image into a symbol.
- Video File: Saves videos directly to the video folder.
- Package (.pak) or Page (.epg): Imports content directly into the current User’s profile.
The modify button makes it easy to customize any onscreen keyboard, allowing you to quickly change the size, color, font and add or remove behaviors
with ease. Additional new onscreen keyboard features were developed to be used in conjunction with:
- Adobe® Content, including Adobe® Reader and Adobe® e-books
- Different access methods, including the new scanning mouse
The Series 5 Software now supports a web camera, which is connected to the V or Vmax device via the USB port. The Series 5 software includes
the software drivers for two recommended cameras - Creative’s Webcam Live! Motion Camera with pan, tilt and zoom functionality, which can all be
controlled from within the Series 5 Software, and Creative’s Live! Cam Optia Camera, which is a static camera.
You may use your access method to direct the web camera and to capture digital pictures, which can be stored in the Images folder and used as page or
pop-up backgrounds. They can also be saved as custom symbols in the My Symbols symbol set.
Slots are a rate enhancement feature on the Series 5 software. They allow for message construction using common phrases (e.g., “For breakfast I want…”)
that are paired with a placeholder (the slot) that can be filled with another phrase or a single word. Several items were added to this powerful feature
making it an even more powerful communication rate enhancement tool.
Speak Random Text using Slots: This new feature can make conversation more spontaneous and engaging. For example, you can program a
Slot with the best friends concept and call the button "Greet Marilyn". When this button is selected, it will use the name "Marilyn" in a randomly chosen
phrase from the best friends concept list, such as, "Hey, Marilyn, what’s up?"; "Marilyn, how’s it going?"; "Hey, Marilyn, what’s going on?", etc.
Nested Slots: A "nested slot" allows the user to include a slot within another slot. For example, you may have the text, "I want meal for lunch", where "meal" is a slot. The filler options for meal could include "soup", "salad" and "sandwich", all of which are slots. If, for example, "sandwich" is selected bythe user, options such as "ham", "turkey" or "peanut butter and jelly" could be selected fillers.
Universal Access to Slots: New navigational tools make navigating the Slots in the Message Window possible using any selection method, including switch access, joystick and Morse Code.
Slot Filler Keyguard Alignment: You can optimize the Slot Filler menu to match the desired page layout or keyguard configuration.
New 40 button hybrid pages have been added to the situational/context dependent users and span all age ranges.
For young adult and adult users, we have added pages including photographs that represent the scene in which communication is taking place. These
pages have the same basic structure as others in the system, but represent the scene as a photo rather than a drawing. All other elements have remained
unchanged.
To better integrate language structure elements, we have included Gateway Pop-ups within Context Dependent and Independent page sets. These can be
accessed in any scene from any of the associated grid pages. They alleviate the burden of excessive navigation, thus accelerating communication. Users
are now able to access a Gateway Pop-up, build the sentence or phrase they wish and return to the previous scene simply by closing the pop-up.
We have also included keyboards and My Phrases. They are attached to the hybrid pages as pop-ups allowing them to be accessed anywhere in the
system within any scene.
